Estes Park is about 76 miles from Denver International Airport and 65 from downtown Denver, and the drive takes roughly an hour and a half. The route runs up US-36 through Boulder and Lyons and then climbs the canyon, gaining more than two thousand feet before town.
This is a mountain drive, not a highway run. The last stretch is winding, it is dark early in winter, and elk on the road are a normal occurrence rather than a surprise. Visitors who land at DIA, rent a car and drive it for the first time at night usually wish they had not.
Most of our trips here are people going to Rocky Mountain National Park, to the Stanley Hotel, to a wedding or to a conference at the YMCA of the Rockies. Many visitors do not. Parking inside Rocky Mountain National Park fills early in summer and the park runs its own shuttles, so a private transfer in and out often works out simpler than renting. Check the park website for current entry requirements before your trip.
